In the .6 release we focused on incremental changes to the Viewer, starting with the settings display, enhanced reading prompt, and adding brightness control.
With .7, we rewrote and modernized the Android Viewer codebase. This has allowed us to majorly update the reading experience in 3 key ways: Seamless Reading, Reading Break, and Grid Mode.
In previous versions of the manga viewer, you needed to pull-and-release to go to the next chapter. This action didn't feel natural, and it interrupted the reading experience.
Now, moving into a new chapter will be seamless - you can swipe to a new chapter the same way you swipe through pages. When you move to a new chapter you'll be informed with a brief New Chapter prompt. An example is below.
Reading Break has been added alongside Seamless Reading. By itself, Seamless Reading could leave you feeling disoriented within a series: have I read too much? How much have I read? When should I stop? We needed a solution that could give you a place to pause if you chose, but didn't interrupt the feeling of Seamless Reading.
Reading Break gives you a chance to pause after a chapter, but is just as effortless to swipe through as a regular page. Reading Break also carves out space for interesting content right inside the reading experience.
Reading Break is designed to provide information tailored specifically for you in future updates. If you like to check out fan art or illustrations for a certain series, Reading Break might deliver it to you. If you've reached the end of a series and want something new, Reading Break might show you a collection that contains similar, curated content.
Updated on version 4.7.1: Reading Break now includes credit pages at the end of each chapter.
The Grid Mode replaces Carousel Mode, which helped you quickly navigate within a chapter.
It was functional, but it had several limitations:
- No natural gesture to enter/exit the mode
- Only provided one dimension for looking through a manga chapter: linear scrolling
- Could only show a few pages at a time
- Didn't make effective use of screen space
Grid Mode makes navigating inside a chapter feel more natural - now you simply pinch on the image to enter Grid Mode. The new design also showcases more pages at once. You will be able to locate where you are and where you want to go in a chapter quickly.
You can also go back to the current page by tapping on the Back to Reading button located at the bottom of the screen.
